- Chanuka 5760/1999 |
Dear Family,
We apologise for the delay in the publication of the English edition of Frumkin News. Instead of it reaching you during the High Holyday season, it will arrive around Chanukah time, so please forgive us and happy Chanukah to everyone.
During the past year we were fortunate to celebrate many happy occasions: weddings, bar mitzvas, a bat chayil, births and the aliya of family members from the Diapora.
On Yom Atzmaut we had our annual family gathering at Henriette and Uri Ophir's home in Herzliya Pituach. The very enjoyable event took the form of a picnic in the garden, with organized activities for the kids and even a Juggling and Magic Show by Ilan Frydman. The new edition of the Frumkin Family Directory, so diligently prepared by Louis Frydman, was distributed to the four generations of the family present. Louis has also done a lot of work to expand the Frumkin Internet site by adding photographs and more information.
A room in the Ma'alot Chaim School in Petach Tikva was recently consecrated in memory of Rabbi Arieh Leib Frumkin, out of funds from the Rachel and Elias Frumkin Trust.
Gladys Dimson, Sam Dimson's widow, passed away recently and her obituary appears in this issue. We sent condolences from all members of the Frumkin Family in Israel to her daughter Wendy Baron.
The Petach Tikva Municipality has decided to commemorate Yosef Marcus's memory by naming a small street in his memory. This lane joins Rechov Yahalom, the road which is named after his father-in-law Binyamin Yahalom. We are waiting to hear when the consecration ceremony will take place.
Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, the Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of Great Britain and the Commonwealth, held a party to celebrate his mother Libby's 80th birthday. May she live to 120!!
May the year 5760 still be one of peace and happiness for us all.
Sincerely yours,
The Executive of the Frumkin Foundation

Obituary - Gladys Dimson (1915 -1999)
The following is taken from the obituary which appeared in the Jewish Chronicle:
"Gladys Dimson came to London as Gladys Sieve from Glasgow, after a year's language study at Glasgow University. She switched subjects at the London School of Economics but failed to complete the course due to marriage and a child.
Her husband Dr. Sam Dimson, whom she married in 1936, died in 1991. She started her voluntary work in 1950, when London was still suffering from post-war housing shortage and lack of building materials. She had been introduced to youth work through her husband's work as a paediatrician at East End hospitals.
Her work led to co-option on to the children's committee of the London County Council and she became chairman of a group of LCC children's homes. She stood for Labour in the 1964 elections for the newly formed Greater London Council and represented Haringey from 1964-1967, Wandswroth from 1970 to 1973 and Battersea North from 1973 to 1985. In 1975 she was dismissed by the ruling Labour administration and as a consolation, was appointed CBE in the 1976 New Year's honours list.
Her long campaign against what she called the "major social evil" of bad housing was rooted in her Jewish upbringing in Glasgow. Her parents emigrated to Israel, where her husband's grandfather had been among the religious founders of Petach Tikva.
She is survived by her daughter, art historian and curator Dr. Wendy Baron, and two grandchildren".
The Executive of the Frumkin Foundation would like to add that the story of Gladys and Sam - who was among the very few Jews to reach the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the British Army - was published in our book "Time of War". Gladys was very involved with Israel and in the activities of the Labour Friends of Israel, visited the country many times and participated in various of the World Zionist Congresses.
